HDT MAY 2019 38 WWW TRUCKINGINFO COM hen the North American Council for Freight Efficiency appeared on the trucking scene a decade ago its mission seemed a bit odd Make the business case for fleets to adopt new technology that would reduce the industrys overall impact on climate change and help promote a cleaner environment At the time the country was experiencing much higher fuel prices says Mike Roeth executive director of NACFE Fleets were really struggling with that new reality On top of that the technology wave that we now sort of live in every day was just starting to become apparent in trucking There was a lot of confusion and angst about all these issues out there And I stepped up And Im really glad I did Its been an incredible experience Today the organization has become one of the industrys leading sources of information on new and emerging technologies with Confidence Reports issued several times a year on a wide range of accessories components operational methods and even future technologies fleets can use to help make smart decisions on when and how to bring new technology into their operations and what benefits or problems they can expect if they do NACFEs contribution to trucking is so prominent that coinciding with its 10th anniversary announcement the organization NACFE celebrates 10th anniversary and recent award NACFEs Run on Less challenge last year sent competitive fleets out on runs across the United States in order to see which drivers and fleet specs performed best in real world operating conditions was recognized as an Organization to Watch by GreenBiz Group in its annual State of Green Business report The honor is reserved for companies and organizations that are taking leadership positions to make significant progress on addressing the worlds more pressing environmental challenges The GreenBiz honor was a very pleasant surprise Roeth says They said they think the work we are doing is balanced pragmatic and helpful to the industry we serve Its a bit ironic that the award was announced the same week we were kind of sticking our chest out about the 10th anniversary NACFE was initially founded at a trucking workshop in April 2009 where a group By Jack Roberts Senior Editor jroberts@ truckinginfo com FUEL SMARTS North American Council for Freight Efficiencys Mike Roeth looks back over past decade of groups accomplishments progression W PHOTO EVAN LOCKRIDGE
